entrevistas com o Hank Snapp, manager da loja da Exile em Laguna.
Dessa vez ele falou de Laguna, pranchas, Brasil e UST...
1) O verão esta quase acabando, fala um pouco do que rolou por aí...
Hank: Bom, para começar, nós tivemos o maior swell dos últimos 3 anos. Alguns dizem que foi o maior dos últimos 10 anos até. Foi gigante, the wedge com 20 pés e Aliso variando de 10 a 15 pés. Isso foi quando o Steve e o Paulo fizeram o vídeo de tow-in. Foi bem louco porque as ondas da série estavam bem separadas no primeiro dia. Então parecia que estava flat e de repente uma onda gigante aparecia. Foi realmente maneiro ver o Steve rebocar o Paulo e o Bill Bryan nas ondas gigantes bem aqui na frente. Tirando isso, o verão foi bem comum. Todo dia a praia estava cheia de skimmers bem jovens. Na verdade, eu já estou sonhando com o dia que essas crianças todas vão ter que voltar para a aula...
2)Desde a última fez que nós fizemos uma dessas entrevistas rolaram vários campeonatos e boas ondas por aí... A Exile está atrás de novos riders? Você está de olho em alguns skimmers que podem virar pro daqui a pouco?
Hank: é verdade... as ondas andam boas por aqui. Parece que todo dia tem alguma coisa, em algum lugar para se divertir. O swell gigante mexeu bastante com o fundo em 10th St. e tem ficado muito bom por lá!
Vai ser bem difícil para alguém entrar no time da Exile agora. Eu estava até falando isso para o Lucas Gomes (Caco), eu acho que ele manda muito bem. Mas, no momento nós temos 45 atletas e isso não inclui as pessoas que a gente ajuda com pranchas a preços mais em conta. Eu acho que nós temos um time incrível e nós não temos muitas razões para procurar novos riders no momento. Nós estamos sendo bem seletivos e focando em deixar os riders atuais felizes.
Com certeza tem alguns riders mandando muito bem aqui em Laguna, se eles continuarem focados com certeza vão impressionar muito gente no futuro. Os gêmeos Kyle e Kalin são dois dos riders mais impressionantes, juntos com o Blair Conklin e eles tem 15 anos ou menos. Eu, honestamente, acho que eles dariam trabalho para muito pro.
3) Tem alguma novidade na Exile que você possa falar para a gente?
Hank: Na verdade não. (risadas). Tudo que eu posso falar é que 2010 esta quase aí e nós temos sim algumas surpresas!
4) Como foi a recepção do Stimulus? Você já venderam quase todas cópias?
Hank: Eu acho que a premiere foi um sucesso. Nós tivemos quase 500 pessoas somando as duas sessões. Foi bem legal ver tantas pessoas interessadas em assistirem um filme de skimboard. Eu acho que a galera tem gostado bastante do filme. Eu realmente não escutei ninguém reclamando do filme. Na verdade eu já escutei umas pessoas falando que a introdução com o café da manha é muito longa.
Na verdade, eu tenho uma história bem legal sobre essa cena. Eu também trabalho em um restaurante em Dana Point (que é ao lado de Laguna) chamado Taco Surf... Nós passamos filmes de surf no telão lá. Quando eu estou trabalhando Bearded ou Stimulus ficam passando sem parar. Há uma semana atrás, o Ryan Sheckler (skatista) foi lá. Ele vai bastante lá até. Mas, enfim, ele e os amigos deles ficaram lá assistindo Stimulus e não paravam de falar o quão maneiro era o filme! Foi bem legal.
Mas, vocês não precisam se preocupar... Nós nunca vamos ficar sem cópias do filme para vender.
5) Vamos falar um pouco sobre pranchas agora... O modelo do Domke está vendendo bastante?! Tem alguma combinação de tamanho/espessura que esta agradando bastante a galera?!
Hank: O modelo do Domke tem vendido muito. Parece que todo mundo na Florida ou na costa leste quer um. Ou pelo menos quer o rocker do Domke. Basicamente, a prancha tem um rocker bem flat no meio, o que significa que a prancha é mais rápida especialmente quando você esta indo buscar as ondas, principalmente de side slip. Com certeza, é uma prancha mais difícil de usar. Em termos de dificudade para andar eu diria que a ordem é: Domke, Pro e Hybrid. Hybrid sendo a mais fácil. Eu pessoalmente não gosto do modelo do Domke tanto assim, mas, isso é mais porque eu costumo skiar em praias mais inclinadas, então a passagem da areia para a água pode ficar bem complicada com um rocker mais flat. Eu tenho certeza que se eu estivesse na costa leste eu adoraria a prancha. Ultimamente parece que as pessoas estão usando pranchas um pouco maiores e cores bem chamativas!
6) O campeonato da UST está bem apertado. Você tem alguma aposta?
Hank: Vai ser bem apertado mesmo. Eu, obviamente, estou apostando que algum dos atletas da Exile vai ganhar. Mas, eu não tenho certeza de quem vai ser. É bem complicado de falar. Tem ainda dois eventos, um em Santa Cruz e outro em Newport. O Paulo costuma mandar bem em Santa Cruz, mas, a onda ajuda bastante o estilo do Domke. O Jaime também está skiando melhor que nunca. Não dá para escolher ninguém entre os sete primeiros no momento. Qualquer um deles pode ganhar. O ranking está tão apertado que é só acontecerem duas baterias com alguns dos top pros que pode mudar tudo e favorecer o Sears ou o Bill. Eu só vou fazer apostas depois de Santa Cruz.
7) Agora, o assunto que a creche não para de falar. O Adam veio para cá, o Nick veio para cá, quando vocês vão vir para cá?!
Bem... você quer ouvir a boa notícia ou a má notícia primeiro? Eu não sei, e eu odeio dizer, mas, provavelmente, não poderemos ir para o Brasil tão cedo. É realmente complicado. Existem vários fatores que prendem a gente aqui...
Uma boa razão para ir para o Brasil seria conhecer os skimmers daí, mas, as nossas trips costumam ser para filmar para os vídeos.
Não me entenda mal, Sununga tem um potencial incrível, mas, parece que as melhores ondas são entre junho e agosto, que é quando a maioria dos nossos atletas estão participando de campeonatos por aqui. Isso sem falar que é impossível de fechar a loja da Exile durante essa época do ano. E ainda por cima temos o problema do visto. O visto demora no mínimo 10 dias. Então, nós não podemos olhar a previsão e falar: Sununga vai estar rolando e pegar um vôo. Muitos dos pros tem empregos e outras obrigações e não podem desaparecer por muito tempo. Tirar o visto não é barato e as passagens também não. E o que acontece se a gente chegar aí e não estiver rolando? Claro que ainda seria bem divertido. Mas, eu acho que do ponto de vista de filmar e de negócios mesmo, existem lugares mais acessíveis da visão do Aaron. Afinal, nós podemos fazer três trips para Cabo pelo preço de uma viagem para o Brasil e quase que com certeza encontrar boas ondas lá.

1) summer is almost over... Could you do a little recap of how summer
was in Laguna?
Well we got one of the biggest swell's southern California's seen in at least 3 years...some are saying 10 years...it was just massive. Like 20' at wedge...Aliso was a solid 10-15'. That's when Steve and Paulo were doing the tow-ins that is on the website. It was crazy because the sets were so spaced apart that first day. It would look dead calm like there were no waves, then out of nowhere a six wave 10' set would roll in. Definitely cool to watch Steve tow Paulo and Beaker in to waves on skims right in the back yard. Other than that its been a pretty typical Laguna summer. Gromfest everyday at the beach. I can't wait for all those kids to go back to school.
2) since we last talked there were a bunch of contests and some pretty nice waves over there i bet... Are u guys looking for new riders?! Do you have any riders in mind that are standing out and should become pro soon?!
Yea the waves have been really great this summer. Seems like everyday there's been something to play around on. That huge swell dished out the sand at 10th St. and its been the best its been in years by all accounts.
Its going to be pretty tough for anyone to get on Exile right now as I was telling Lucas, who I definitely think kills it. Right now we have over 45 sponsored riders, and that doesn't include people like myself and some others that we hook up. I think we have an incredible team, and there just isn't any reason to be looking for riders. We are just being super selective now, and trying to keep the current members happy.
There are definitely some groms here in Laguna, that if they keep there heads on straight are going to blow peoples minds in a few years. The twins Kyle and Kalin are two of the sickest riders along side Blair Conklin I've seen in a long time, and they're all 15 or younger. I honestly think they could give a bunch of pro a run for their money now.
3) is there any new Exile surprises you can talk about??
No haha. All I'm going to say is that 2010 is right around the corner, and we do have somethings up are sleeve for next year.
4) How was the reception for Stimulus?! Are guys almost sold out of them??
I think the premiere was a huge success. I think we had almost 500 people show up between the two shows. So cool to see that many people come out for a skim flick. I think its reception's been great. I haven't really heard any negative feedback about it other than the super long "breakfast intro" haha.
I actually have a pretty cool story about it. I also work at a resturant in Dana Point called Taco Surf as a server....we play surf movies and well whenever I'm working you can almost guarantee that Bearded or Stimulus is on loop. Well about a week ago Ryan Sheckler came in. He actually frequents the place quite often. Anyways, him and his buddies were sitting by one of the tv's playing Stimulus, and he literally couldn't take his eyes off of it. I could here him saying how sick it was. Pretty cool....
Oh and we will never sell out of them
5) let's talk a bit about boards... How is domke's pro model doing sales wise?! is there any size/thickness trend that we should know
about?!
Domke's pro model has been a huge hit. It seems like everyone in Florida and the east coast wants one or at least the "knocked back" rocker on his board. Basically the board has a large "flat" spot in the rocker making it faster especially when you're sliding out to waves and side slipping. It is definitely a harder board to ride. Difficulty wise it goes the Domke, Pro, then hybrid. I personally don't like it all that much, but that's just because I'm typically skimming beaches that are steeper, and that sand to water transfer can really be tough with a flatter board. I'm sure if I was back on the east coast I would love it. Its definitely a lot faster side slipping though. It seems like everyone is going with bigger boards lately, and bright bright colors too.
6) the UST is pretty close... any bets?!
It is going to be a close one. I'm betting that an Exile rider comes out on top, but I'm not sure who its going to be. Its really hard to say...I mean there's two events left Santa Cruz and Newport. Paulo's done well repeatedly in Santa Cruz, but the wave really fits Domke's style so I could see either of them doing well. Jaime has really locked up himself lately, and skimming better than ever. You can't rule anyone one in the top 7 out right now. Any of them can win on any given day, and its so close all it takes is two stacked heats to completely turn things around for same Sears or Bill. Jury's out I'll get back to you after Santa Cruz.
7)now, the topic the kids don't stop talking about... Adam came here, Nick came here, when are u guys going to come over?!
Well do you want the good news or bad news? I don't know, and I hate to say this, but probably not anytime soon unfortunately. Its just really hard. There are just so many factors that hold us back.
While part of the reason would be to meet skimboarders from Brazil, and hang out etc...I know most of our trips are to film for our movies.
Don't get me wrong Sununga has huge potential, but it seems like its the best in June, July, and August, which is when most of our team riders are traveling for contests here. Not to mention its literally impossible to shut down the shop during that time. On top of all that you have to get a visa which takes at least 10 days to get so its not like we can look on a surf report go "holy sh*t" Sununga is going to be firing hop on a flight and go. A lot of these guys have other jobs and obligations that they have to tend to, and just can't be gone that long. Visa's aren't cheap and neither are plane flights. Then what if you get there and its not good? Obviously it'd still be a ton of fun. I think from a filming and business point of view there are more economical skim destinations out there in Aaron's eyes. I mean we can take three trips down to Cabo for the price of one trip to Brazil, and almost certainly score good waves.
